Role Summary
To ensure that animal care and use is accordance with all applicable guidelines, regulations and acceptable international standards (e.g. NACLAR guidelines, AAALAC, GLP).
To assist the Attending Veterinarian in planning and overseeing the animal health program, including disease surveillance monitoring, animal treatment and support husbandry and care of laboratory animals.
The veterinarian will also be responsible for participating in the IACUC in the review of animal protocols and advising the IACUC and other staff on animal health issues, pain and distress, anaesthetics, analgesics and euthanasia.
Responsibilities
Veterinary Care
• To observe and assess the animal care and health, and providing treatment for animals or euthanasia, including emergency care, where applicable.
• To advise and perform diagnostics, where applicable.
• To assist in the review of the Animal Emergency Response Plan and Business Continuity Plan (Veterinary Care).
• To assist in the review of animal health reports, as well as the test reports of rodent derived biologics
• To assist in the animal health monitoring program, including the control of any pathogen outbreak
Compliance
• To ensure continual compliance with the GUIDE and the NACLAR guidelines on animal care and use matters and assisting in the preparation of pre-inspection documents (Program Description for AAALAC, Forms A and B for AVS) and annual reports.
• To assist in the planning and managing of AAALAC and AVS inspections, as well as GLP and Sponsor audits, as required.
IACUC
To participate in the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee as the backup to the Attending Veterinarian by reviewing animal care and use protocols, policies and SOPs and advising on animal health issues related to studies.
In vivo Studies
• To act as a subject matter expert during the development of experimental animal models and review study requests from Sponsors
• To support the conduct of studies, e.g., training, surgery, ophthalmoscopy examination, urine microscopy, and ensure veterinary activities are conducted in accordance with study plan requirements.
• To assist in vivo research associates, scientists and coordinators as and when required.
Training
• To be familiar with the Responsible Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (RCULA), including animal handling and restraint, anaesthesia, euthanasia, etc, and to assist in ad-hoc training as requested.
• To assist in the review of veterinary related training materials, e.g. RCULA curricula, and SOP/WKIs.
Operations
• To support the operations of the animal facility by providing veterinary advice and recommendations.
• To assist in the review Certificate of Analysis (COA) and contaminant analysis for veterinary drugs, animal feed, bedding and water.
Regulated materials
• To help monitor and control related supplies, including animal shipments, import and export of animal tissues, medication, controlled drugs, consumables, euthanasia equipment and other equipment as requested.
• To help ensure records and distribution of regulated drugs and medical devices for use in studies comply with the conditions of their approvals.
