Our client is a leading international banking group with a strong presence in Europe and a significant global footprint, offering a wide range of financial services including corporate and institutional banking, asset management, and retail banking. Known for its commitment to sustainability and innovation, the bank operates in over 70 countries and serves clients across diverse sectors worldwide.

They are looking for a Legal Counsel, Corporate Banking, supporting APAC.

Job Description

This role is part of a regional legal team supporting a wide range of corporate and investment banking activities across the Asia-Pacific region. The role focuses on providing legal support for debt financing transactions, particularly in areas such as loan capital markets and fund financing. The legal team operates across multiple jurisdictions and collaborates closely with internal stakeholders and external counsels.

Responsibilities
  • Transactional Support: Advise on, structure, draft, and negotiate legal documentation for financing transactions, working directly with business teams.
  • Documentation Management: Develop and maintain legal templates and agreements to support banking products and services across the region.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with internal departments such as compliance, risk, and agency teams to address legal issues.
  • External Counsel Oversight: Manage relationships with law firms across APAC, including instruction and supervision.
  • Legal Risk Management: Ensure compliance with internal legal policies and procedures in all financing matters.
  • Knowledge Sharing: Contribute to legal know-how, updates, and policy development within the legal function.
  • Cross-Border Collaboration: Participate in global and regional legal initiatives, including multi-jurisdictional projects and sustainable finance efforts.
  • Regulatory Awareness: Monitor and analyze legal and regulatory developments relevant to banking and finance in the region.

The Successful Applicant

  • Qualified in a common law jurisdiction with at least 5 years of post-qualification experience (PQE) in banking and finance, gained at an international or regional law firm or within the legal department of a financial institution.
  • Possess strong legal analytical skills and a proven track record in managing and executing cross-border financing transactions.
  • Have solid experience and understanding of syndicated lending and security arrangements across Asia-Pacific jurisdictions.
  • Bring familiarity with export and trade finance, which would be considered a plus.
  • Be well-versed in the use and negotiation of LMA/APLMA standard documentation for mandates and loans.
  • Demonstrate a sound understanding of related legal areas, including dispute resolution and regulatory frameworks relevant to lending and finance.
  • Work independently with attention to detail, balancing commercial awareness with a strong sense of legal and risk compliance.
  • Exhibit effective time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet tight deadlines.
  • Be self-driven and confident in handling a varied workload and engaging with diverse stakeholders.
  • Show strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate across disciplines and jurisdictions.
  • Be a team-oriented professional who is adaptable, diligent, and open to learning across a broad range of banking products.
