About the Role

As an Assistant Foreign Editor, you will be part of the desk that shapes The Straits Times' coverage of regional and international news. You will work closely with our network of over two dozen correspondents in bureaus across Asia-Pacific, Europe and America to tell those stories with a distinctive voice and in different forms - from breaking news articles to long-form multimedia features - for our readers in the region. This position has a particular focus on Southeast Asia.

Successful candidates will:
  • Guide foreign correspondents in identifying and producing original stories that offer an accurate picture of how the people in Southeast Asia's diverse countries live, work and play, as well as the mega-trends sweeping through the region
  • Help foreign correspondents sensemake and connect the dots between what is happening in their respective patches and other parts of the world
  • Conceptualise and edit exclusive news reports, features and multimedia content
  • Plan ahead and come up with creative ways of covering major news events and developments
  • Coordinate with other teams in the newsroom to put together integrated multimedia and longform projects
  • Mentor younger editors on the desk


Who we are looking for

You should be able to / have:
  • At least 8 years of experience in journalism and/or research in international relations.
  • Field experience covering relevant regions will be a distinct advantage.
  • Well-honed news sense and the ability to make quick, sound editorial decisions.
  • Demonstrable ability to edit raw copy into compelling stories.
  • Keen interest and thorough knowledge of the international news agenda.
  • Take on board complex topics and make them accessible to general interest readers.
  • Strong communication and people management skills.
