The School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) provides a vibrant and nurturing environment for staff and students to carry out inter-disciplinary research in key areas such as Computational Materials Science, Characterisation Materials Science, Defence Composite Materials, Functional Composite Materials, Energy, Nanomaterials, Low Dimensional Materials, Biomaterials Materials, Biological Materials, Bioinspired Materials and Sustainable Materials.

The School of Materials Science & Engineering is seeking to hire a Research Associate to undertake responsibilities in the development of novel materials for energy harvesting device and in-depth understanding the device performance in a NRF-CRP project to ensure the project milestones are achieved.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct advanced characterization on thin films and nanostructure samples, especially FIB and TEM.
  • Develop workflow for device fabrication.
  • Develop methodologies to conduct in-depth photophysical, structural and functional studies and improve instrumentation setup.
  • Generate/Write reports.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholder on the area of development and understanding of thin films and interfaces on the device performances.
  • Mentoring interns, undergraduates and postgraduate students
  • Assist in grant writing.
  • Maintenance of lab or equipment or supplies that include procurement and liaison with suppliers.
  • Produce high quality reports and documents that consolidate research findings.


Job Requirements:
  • Masters degree in Materials Science, Physics, or relevant field.
  • Experience photophysical/electrical/structural techniques for materials characterization.
  • Experience in characterization techniques such as aberration corrected transmission electron microscopy (AC-TEM), Focused Ion Beam (FIB), etc, will be an advantage.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team with strong initiatives.
  • Good communication and written skills.
  • Responsible and passionate self-starter.
