About the role

The Bauxite and Alumina team is merging market strategy and portfolio teams and as a result, we are looking for a Principal Advisor - Market Strategy, Portfolio, and PMO. This role is responsible for nurturing and driving the delivery of commercial initiatives within Rio Tinto's global bauxite and alumina commercial organization. This will be achieved by contributing to market strategies, supporting the sales team in analysis and price mandates, initiative generation, development, and implementation to drive P&L outcomes and commercial excellence.

The role will contribute to the profitability of Rio Tinto by working and cooperating with all B&A Sales and Marketing team members across the Pacific and Atlantic. Reporting to the Senior Manager - Market Strategy and Portfolio, you will be:
  • Delivering key elements of the Market Strategy, Portfolio, and PMO team ensuring that the group maximizes the long-term profitability of our bauxite business with well-developed go-to-market and sales strategies.
  • Delivering refreshed, Go-to-market strategies for bauxite, alumina, hydrate, and other by-products managed by the B&A team so that product and pricing strategies maximize the sales effort and align with RTA priorities.
  • Coordinating inputs from PacOps, Atlantic Ops, RTA Strategy, and Commercial Strategy into the formulation of overall commercial strategy for the product group or business unit, including marketing strategy, product, segmentation, customer account planning, technical marketing, pricing, and brand management.
  • Supporting bauxite market tender processes in conjunction with the sales team in addition to other price transparency initiatives.
  • Running the B&A Project Management Office supporting bauxite and alumina sales managers in the Atlantic and Pacific with a structured approach to plan, prioritize and deliver contributing to the volume, quality, price, margin, and ESG targets.
  • A key member of the B&A sales and marketing leadership team.
  • Contributing to the team's development of the annual business planning, supporting team priorities, resource allocation, the financial forecast, and the 5-year plan.
  • Keeping abreast with industry news, changing trends, economic indicators, and competitors - engaging with Market Analysis and Commercial Markets Desk to gain market insights; understanding trade flows to identify opportunities and impact on RTA product strategy.
  • Devising solutions to complex issues based on data.
  • Supporting ESG initiatives including valorization of refinery and smelter by-products to support the circular economy. Aligning plans to bauxite and alumina customer aspirations for decarbonization and raw material providence.
  • Leading or contributing to the Sales and Marketing improvement projects and tracking the visibility of the value pipeline initiatives.
  • Coordinate B&A risk review in conjunction with Assisting the Sales Managers with customer negotiation planning, analysis, and execution.

About you

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:
  • B.A. Engineering, Business, Finance or equivalent.
  • 7+ years of progressive experience in sales and marketing across the mining and metals industry.
  • Strong acumen for analysis, sales, marketing, commercial and business development.
  • Proven track record of building business plans and driving delivery.
  • Leadership experience in inspiring and coaching a high-performance team.
  • Demonstrated ability to simplify complexity and present comprehensible and workable proposals in written and oral modes to senior management.

It will also be beneficial if you have:
  • Experience in strategy consulting or similar problem-solving-based field.
  • Some understanding of bauxite value in use and alumina refinery process economics.
  • An MBA.
