The Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering (SCELSE) is a unique interdisciplinary Research Centre of Excellence (RCE), funded by National Research Foundation, Ministry of Education, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and National University of Singapore (NUS). Hosted by NTU in partnership with NUS, SCELSE is linking new insights from the life sciences with expertise from emerging technologies in engineering and natural sciences to understand, harness and control microbial biofilm communities and microbiomes.
SCELSE is seeking a research fellow with established field techniques, ability to use molecular protocols for DNA and RNA isolation from marine bacteria and seagrasses for molecular community analysis, genome sequencing and metagenomics. The candidate should be a talented marine microbiologist with experience working with marine microbes and field experience.

SCELSE is seeking a research fellow with established field techniques, ability to use molecular protocols for DNA and RNA isolation from marine bacteria and seagrasses for molecular community analysis, genome sequencing and metagenomics. The candidate should be a talented marine microbiologist with experience working with marine microbes and field experience.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform manipulative experiments with seagrasses to determine their thermal tolerance.
- To sample, manipulate and experiment with symbiotic microbiomes and individual bacteria from seagrasses.
- Work with a group of marine scientists to identify beneficial microbiomes for seagrass resilience.
Job Requirements:
- PhD in marine microbiology or marine microbial ecology
- Competent in molecular microbiology and bioinformatics
- Ability to culture bacteria and manipulate them in laboratory and field station settings.
- Ability to perform DNA and RNA manipulation (e.g., extraction, purification, QC) for molecular community analysis.
- Ability to perform PAM-fluorometry, flow cytometry, microscopy, colorimetric and fluorescent measurements.
- Marine field experience
- Confidence in swimming, working in intertidal zone and boat travel for field sampling.
- Scientific diving experience is an asset but not required.
- Ability to handle microbes competently and safely up to Biological Safety Level 2 (BSL2)
- Good aseptic technique
- Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.
- Excellent interpersonal skills
