The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) is seeking a Research Fellow to contribute to our project on natural catastrophe models, focusing on earthquakes, tsunamis, and landslides. The selected candidate will join the Computational Geophysics Lab at EOS under the supervision of Asst Prof. Luca Dal Zilio and will be part of the "Integrating Volcano and Earthquake Science and Technology (InVEST) in Southeast Asia" project. This 5-year project aims to improve our understanding of natural hazards and their cascading impacts in Southeast Asia. This position focuses on probabilistic seismic and tsunami hazard assessment and the development of offshore and coastal inundation models for industrial regions.

The appointed candidate will develop and apply probabilistic models that incorporate complex natural hazard interactions and their potential impacts on coastal and industrial regions. Utilizing supercomputing resources, this work will create models predicting ground motions, tsunami inundation, and landslide risks. The role demands close collaboration with an international team of geologists, seismologists, geodesists, and hazard modelers, as well as stakeholders, to integrate these models into comprehensive hazard assessments.

Key Responsibilities:

• Conduct Probabilistic Hazard Assessments: Develop and utilize advanced probabilistic models to compute viable earthquake, tsunami, and landslide scenarios.

• Model Development and Data Integration: Develop numerical models informed by geological, geophysical, and geodetic datasets, ensuring robust and accurate representation of natural hazards.

• Tsunami Inundation Modeling: Create and refine offshore and coastal inundation models for industrial regions, focusing on potential impacts and mitigation strategies.

• Data Management and Analysis: Manage, analyze, and interpret complex datasets, employing the latest methodologies and tools for accurate and efficient data processing.

• Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Engage in close collaboration with experts across diverse disciplines, integrating various datasets to enhance the understanding of regional hazard dynamics.

• Stakeholder Engagement: Work with stakeholders to ensure models are relevant and applicable, providing clear communication and understanding of hazard assessments.

• Scenario Analysis and Hazard Identification: Identify potentially impactful hazard scenarios specific to the Southeast Asian region, focusing on high-risk areas and key geological features.

• Dissemination of Research Findings: Present, publish, and communicate research results in scientific meetings, scholarly journals, and other relevant platforms, contributing to the broader scientific discourse

Job Requirements:

• Ph.D. in Earth Science, Geology, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or Computer Science

• Post-doctoral experience an advantage

• Expertise and interests in numerical modelling, earthquake source physics, and fracture mechanics

• Experience in computational seismology and numerical methods

• Strong expertise in programming with MATLAB/Python/Fortran/Julia/C/C++

• Track record of publishing research relevant to the position in international recognized journals

• Evidence of excellent communication skills

• Evidence of independence in research direction and team spirit
