The National Institute of Education invites suitable applications for the position of Research Associate on a 24-month contract at the Center for Research in Child Development, Office of Education Research.

Project Title: Home Mathematics Environment in Singapore: Mapping the Landscape (MathScape)

Project Introduction: In the current research project, we investigate the interrelation between parental practices, beliefs, knowledge, and attitudes to gain insights into the role that Singaporean parents play in the development of early mathematical abilities. Our specific research aims are i) understanding the interplay and impact of those factors on the development of young children's mathematical abilities, ii) exploring whether this ecosystem is influenced by socio-economic disparities, and iii) determining how this ecosystem differs from that in Western countries. Findings may contribute to children's school readiness as well as reduce the need for mathematics support programs at the early stages of formal education.

Requirements:
  • Master's degree or higher in Psychology, Child development, Early childhood education or a related field from a University of good standing.
  • Possess excellent communication skills with a good command of the English language.
  • Good project coordination and administration skills, including data management and storage.
  • Experience with relevant software (Microsoft Office, SPSS, etc.)
  • Excellent organizational skills and able to work within given deadlines
  • Able to work independently
  • Good leadership skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Self-directed learner who effectively picks up relevant skills as needed


Responsibilities:

The Research Associate will support the day-to-day operations of the research project.

Tasks:
  • Liaise and work closely with stakeholders from external institutions to identify project collaborators
  • Conduct literature reviews and preparing research progress reports
  • Day to day coordination of funded projects
  • Preparation of ethics documents to institutional review boards.
  • Participant recruitment and coordination with school/centre staff
  • Data collection using psychological and psychoeducational testing
  • Perform research-related administrative work, e.g. purchase of materials/equipment for research
  • To manage day to day operations and meticulous record keeping of the research project
  • To supervise and train undergraduate student and part-time research staff working on this project
  • To carry any other duties as required by Principal Investigator
