The MVAIT lab at Nanyang Technological University conducts high quality research on AI for medicine. These projects include the development of AI and software tools for the analysis of different types of medical data, such as omics, cell and medical imaging data. The objective is to enhance clinical efficiency and introduce affordable and effective biomedical technology to the society.

The role of the Research Assistant/Associate (RA) includes conducting research on medical imaging data processing, 3D reconstruction, and AI algorithms with surgical robotics. The RA will not only design and implement state-of-the-art algorithms but will also be actively involved in the development and refinement of AI tools tailored for diverse medical domains. These endeavors aim to bridge the gap between advanced computational solutions and practical medical applications. The tools and solutions developed by the RA will be meticulously adapted to help the clinicians, radiologists, and biologists, facilitating them in their daily tasks and pioneering research. The RA will be involved in projects which aims to harness technology for the enhancement of patient outcomes and clinical efficiency.

Key responsibilities:
  • Design and implement AI algorithms to analyze medical datasets, including MR, CT, X-ray, and ultrasound data.
  • Conduct research on high-precision medical 3D reconstruction
  • Develop, test, and refine AI tools for different medical domains, ensuring the efficiency of the tools in real-world medical settings.
  • Design dashboards or visualization tools to incorporate the implemented AI algorithms, and utilize VR/AR equipment and 3D visualization to enhance the understanding for clinicians, as well as facilitate in the training of students.
  • Collaborate with external researchers and interdisciplinary teams, including radiologists, surgeons, and roboticists, to ensure the project practicality and clinical relevance.
  • Assist in developing AI-assisted robotic solutions for surgical procedures, including pre-operative planning and intra-operative guidance.
  • Analyze and interpret the data outcomes from the AI models and the medical procedures to provide critical insights and suggestion for improvements.
  • Be aligned and updated with the latest advancements in medical imaging, image processing, and robotics to ensure that the research conducted is at the forefront of the field.
  • Attend conferences, workshops, and seminars to represent the research team, gather new knowledge, and establish collaborations.
  • Collaborate with external researchers to conduct research on AI and ML on medical datasets.
  • Publish articles in high quality journals, ensuring that the work is recognized and accessible to the broader scientific community.
  • Draft research projects, grant projects, and contribute to the strategic research direction of the lab.
  • Ensure that research activities adhere to ethical guidelines and patient data privacy regulations.


Key competencies:
  • Bachelor's or master's degree from a prestigious institution, majoring in Computer Engineering, Computing, Electrical Engineering, etc.
  • Strong experience in deep learning, AI, computer vision, 3D reconstruction algorithms, and LLM algorithms.
  • Expert knowledge of programming languages such as Python, C++, etc.
  • Strong experience in Pytorch, Tensorflow
  • Experience in the development of web tools
  • Experience in the analysis and interpretation of medical imaging datasets
  • Proven ability to conduct projects collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams, including with clinicians, radiologists, and other medical professionals.
  • Demonstrated research excellence with existing publications in top conferences such as CVPR, ICCV, ECCV or journals such as TMI, PAMI, etc.
  • Experience in annotation and labeling software, particularly LabelImg, and ability to develop and customize data annotation tools for machine learning of medical datasets.
  • Proficiency in utilizing VR/AR equipment and 3D software like Unity or other tools for medical visualization purposes.
  • Strong understanding of ethical considerations, patient data privacy regulations, and data compliance aspects of medical research.
  • Proactive and motivated, with a demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Proficiency in Opencv and COLMAP is a plus.
