The Future Ready Food Safety Hub (FRESH) invites applications for the position of Research Fellow.

FRESH serves as Singapore's lead scientific platform under the Singapore Food Story R&D Programme, to bring together researchers, regulators and industry to build up Singapore's food safety science and R&D capabilities to secure Singapore's food supply and economic value proposition. FRESH will embark on R&D and talent development activities to help enhance Singapore's local food regulatory capabilities and allow "first-in-market" food products to be safely launched in Singapore, as well as help promote Singapore-developed food standards internationally. FRESH is part of the Singapore Food Story R&D Programme (SFS), with partner organisations being the Singapore Food Agency (SFA), A*STAR and the Nanyang Technological University (NTU).

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead projects focused on the development of scientific solutions for issues related to food microbial safety, as identified by the food industry and government.
  • Develop, together with other FRESH staff, new research ideas and collaborations related to microbial safety amd microbial risk assessment of foods and food processes, including novel biotech production.
  • Manage research officers and students for respective projects under his/ her charge.
  • Promote FRESH within the Singapore Food Story and wider food production/ manufacturing ecosystem.
  • Engage with local and international food companies on collaborative projects and secure funding for FRESH research activities (ideally 2-3 projects per year dependent on size and competitive grant funding).
  • Actively apply for competitive grant opportunities to grow FRESH capabilities and support research themes.
  • Grow yourself as an internationally recognized expert within your specific field and help FRESH grow as a national and regional center of excellence in food safety science.


Job Requirements:
  • Hold a PhD in a relevant discipline such as microbiology, microbial risk assessment, food science and food safety. Particular interest is in candidates with experience in food microbial risk assessment along the entire supply chain from farm to fork. Experience in biotechnology and strain safety and/or applying machine learning to model process contamination risks would be advantageous.
  • Direct experience working in a food microbiology lab and in conducting microbial assessments
  • Strong background in microbiological techniques of culturing, identification and enumeration
  • Have a general understanding of the commercial and regulatory environment of the Singapore food industry
  • Comfortable with a role that crosses academic, industry and regulatory thinking.
