UWCSEA is looking for a Teacher of High School English to join its Dover campus in August 2026.

The successful applicant will have experience teaching English literature and/or English language at a high school level. Experience teaching the IB English Literature and English Language and Literature courses will be an advantage along with Film. The successful candidate will be expected to teach a combination of IB Diploma courses, and our UWCSEA Narrative of the World courses in Grades 9 and 10.

The English Department is a team composed of enthusiastic and dynamic teachers who work in a very well-resourced environment for learning. Collectively the team is striving to ensure all students can access learning and excel to the best of their abilities.

Experience in and enthusiasm for teaching Film in Grades 9 and 10 or IB Diploma Theory of Knowledge would be an advantage but is not essential. The actual determination of classes will be dependent on the skill set of the appointee, the needs of our students and timetabling requirements.

Main Responsibilities

  • Teachers should be willing to contribute positively to the collaborative culture of the English and broader High School teams.
  • Teachers should construct learning experiences that challenge students, support the diversity of learners in each classroom and demonstrate a strong commitment to concept-based teaching and learning.
  • Teachers should ensure assessments support ongoing learning and provide timely, relevant and appropriate feedback to students on formative and summative assessments.
  • Teachers should demonstrate effective classroom management that shows an understanding of the academic, social and emotional dimensions of learning.
  • Teachers should keep parents informed about the learning of their children, and be proactive in communication with parents.

It should be noted that the College is a dynamic and high-energy environment: the rewards are high - but so are the demands on teacher time and expectations of engagement.

Expectations and Standards

Person Specifications

  • A good degree and a recognized teaching qualification or certification are expected.
  • Experience of teaching the IB Diploma English A Literature and/or Language and Literature courses would be highly desirable and experience or interest in curriculum development is advantageous.
  • The ability to engage with students and to engender enthusiasm for learning is a prerequisite for teaching at UWCSEA.
  • A demonstrated commitment to holistic assessment practises and regular feedback to students.
  • A commitment to diversity and inclusion is essential alongside a willingness to adapt and develop pedagogy to meet the needs of our learners.
  • Applicants should be enthusiastic about teaching within a multicultural environment. Flexibility of approach and a collaborative style are essential.
  • Teachers should be willing and eager to participate in the five key elements of a UWCSEA education: Academics; Activities; Outdoor Education; Personal and Social Education; and Service.
  • Academic expectations include enthusiastic participation in Professional Learning.
  • Pastoral expectations include the leadership of a mentor group, unless the teacher is exempted due to other responsibilities.
  • On average the College expects a yearly contribution of two sessions per week in each season to Activities and/or Service, or equivalent for a part-time role.
