Job Title: PE Teaching Assistant
Reports To: Head of PE, Sport, and ECA

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

The PE Teaching Assistant supports the effective delivery of the Physical Education curriculum, sports programmes, and extra-curricular activities (ECA). The role involves assisting teachers and coaches in lessons, supporting students' participation, maintaining equipment, and helping ensure the smooth running of all PE- and sport-related activities across the school.

Areas of Key Focus

1. Teaching & Learning (Physical Education)
  • Assist PE teachers during lessons, including setup, demonstrations, and supervision of activities.
  • Support individual students or small groups to ensure participation, inclusion, and safety.
  • Help maintain positive behaviour and engagement in PE lessons.
  • Prepare, distribute, and collect PE resources and equipment efficiently.
  • Reinforce key skills and learning outcomes under teacher guidance.

2. Support for Sports Programmes
  • Assist with training sessions, fixtures, and tournaments (during and after school).
  • Help coordinate logistics for inter-house and inter-school events (e.g., setup, equipment, transport).
  • Supervise students during warm-ups, drills, and cool-downs under teacher direction.
  • Promote teamwork, fair play, and sportsmanship among students.

3. Extra-Curricular Activities (ECA) Support
  • Support the organisation and running of school ECAs and clubs.
  • Liaise with external providers and coaches as directed by the Head of PE.
  • Supervise students during ECAs to ensure engagement, safety, and appropriate conduct.
  • Assist with attendance records and feedback collection.

4. Equipment & Facility Management
  • Assist in the maintenance, inventory, and safe storage of PE and sports equipment.
  • Ensure facilities are prepared before lessons and left tidy after use.
  • Report equipment faults or safety concerns promptly to the Head of PE.

5. Student Welfare & Safeguarding
  • Ensure the highest standards of safeguarding and child protection are upheld during all on-site and off-site sports and ECA activities.
  • Conduct regular risk assessments for all venues, activities, and transportation arrangements.
  • Ensure all PE staff, coaches, and external providers are aware of and comply with the school's safeguarding policies and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, incidents, and follow-up actions related to health and safety or welfare concerns.
  • Promote a culture of vigilance, inclusion, and respect among staff and students.
  • Liaise with the school's Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) regarding any concerns about student safety or well-being.

6. Communication & Team Support
  • Work collaboratively with PE teachers, coaches, and other staff to deliver high-quality programmes.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, students, and parents when appropriate.
  • Support school sports and events such as Sports Day, Fitness Week, and tournaments.
  • Uphold the school's values, professionalism, and positive team spirit.
  • Any other duties assigned to support the school

Job Specification

Years of Experience:
  • Minimum 1-2 years of experience working with children or in a sports/educational setting preferred.

Education:
  • Diploma or certification in Physical Education, Sports Science, or a related field.
  • Teaching/coaching qualifications (e.g., Level 1/2 Coaching Certificate) desirable.

Professional Competencies:
  • Strong interest in sport, health, and physical education.
  • Ability to engage and motivate students of all abilities.
  • Reliable, organised, and proactive with good teamwork skills.
  • Competent in ICT for attendance, scheduling, or reporting tasks.

Language Abilities:
  • Fluency in spoken and written English.
  • Ability to speak other languages desirable

Other Requirements:
  • Current first aid and safeguarding certification preferred.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours for school events, fixtures, or ECAs.
