LUTHERAN CHURCH OF OUR REDEEMER
ARE YOU CALLED TO THE ORDAINED MINISTRY?
Our Lutheran Heritage
Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer is a congregation within the Lutheran Church in Singapore, bearing witness to a rich theological tradition that began over 500 years ago. When Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the castle church door in Wittenberg in 1517, he ignited a movement that would reshape Christianity-not to create division, but to recover the Gospel's liberating truth.
We believe, teach, and confess the transformative gospel of Jesus Christ as revealed in Scripture and faithfully interpreted through our Lutheran Confessions. Our identity is shaped by four distinctive characteristics:
• Christ-Centered Focus: Every aspect of our theology, worship, and community life revolves around the person and work of Jesus Christ. Through Him alone we understand God's nature and receive His grace.
• Liturgical Worship: Our services embrace the historic rhythms and patterns of Christian worship, connecting us to believers across time and space while speaking clearly to contemporary hearts and minds. Here, Word and Sacrament come together in a life-giving encounter with God's presence.
• Sacramental Spirituality: We recognize that God works through tangible means-water, bread, wine, and the spoken Word-to deliver His grace and promises. These are not mere symbols but vehicles through which Christ comes to us.
• Law and Gospel Preaching: Our proclamation faithfully distinguishes between God's Law that reveals our need for grace and His Gospel that delivers Christ's redemption. This balanced approach speaks truthfully to the human condition while offering genuine hope.
Our theological perspective embraces profound paradoxes that reflect life's complexity: bread and wine that are also Christ's body and blood; believers who are simultaneously saints and sinners ( simul iustus et peccator ); a God who is both hidden and revealed.
These tensions aren't contradictions but reflections of divine mystery working in a broken world.
Is your heart stirring? Do these convictions resonate with your understanding of faith and calling? Perhaps God is leading you to seek a call with us.
The Ideal Candidate:
• Recent or upcoming theological graduate (Class of 2025)
• Willing to learn and embrace Lutheran theological distinctives
• Appreciates the liturgical forms of worship.
• Clear sense of calling to ordained ministry
• Desire to connect historic faith with contemporary challenge
Your Journey with Us:
• You will join us as a parish worker (pastoral ministry) for six months.
• Upon confirmation, you will be recommended to be a preacher of the Lutheran Church in Singapore.
• As a preacher you will embark on a three-year discernment journey, where you will be guided by a senior clergy in all aspects of pastoral ministry, and you will be required to take Lutheran distinctive courses which will culminate in the writing of a short essay on a Lutheran topic.
• Upon successful completion, God's call on you to be his minister will be conferred by the laying on of hands.
