Job Description

The National University of Singapore is seeking a highly motivated Research Fellow to work on fire suppression modelling for lithium-ion batteries and electric vehicles (EVs). The successful candidate will focus on developing advanced computational models to understand and mitigate thermal runaway, fire propagation, and suppression strategies in battery packs and EV systems. The work will involve close collaboration with experimental teams from partner institutes to validate models and translate research into practical fire safety solutions.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement computational models (CFD and fire dynamics) for fire suppression in battery modules and EVs (cars and buses).
  • Simulate thermal runaway, gas release, flame spread, suppression agent dispersion, and cooling mechanisms.
  • Collaborate with external experimental groups to design tests and integrate modelling with experimental data.
  • Publish research findings in high-impact journals and present at conferences.
  • Contribute to project management, student mentoring, and preparation of research proposals and reports.

Qualifications

• PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Fire Safety Engineering, Energy Systems, or a related discipline.

• Strong expertise in computational modelling (CFD, FDS, FireFOAM, OpenFOAM, or ANSYS Fluent).

• Experience in fire suppression, multiphase flows, sprays, or suppression agents (e.g., water mist, inert gases, foams) is desirable.

• Familiarity with battery systems, EV safety, or fire and combustion science is an advantage.

• Strong programming and data analysis skills (Python, MATLAB, C++, etc.).

• Demonstrated ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals.

• Strong teamwork and communication skills for collaborative research with experimental partners.
