The Role

We require a colleague who is a highly experienced University Guidance Counsellor to join a busy and effective team in giving advice and guidance to students and their parents about GCSE options, Post 16 Pathways (A level and IB), University, Higher and Further Education course choices and career options. A teaching background in Secondary education would be preferable.

The Candidate must be confident to lead, in conjunction with the team, information sessions and workshops for parents and students on systems such as UCAS, and the Common App, international university applications and post-results procedures, as well as contribute to the faculty's resources. A knowledge of the British education system and international applications in North America and Europe would be an advantage.

Key Responsibilities

1. Management of students:
  • To promote strategies which develop the competence and confidence of every student when seeking GCSE options/Post 16 Pathways/ university/careers counselling.
  • To deliver specialist workshops to students in preparation for future university applications, careers or gap years (including our National Service students).
  • To document meetings with students and parents to GCSE options/track Post 16 Pathways/ university/careers counselling and advice.
  • Be responsible for reporting any concerns about a child to the Designated Safeguarding Lead.
  • To oversee the production and submission of all necessary documents for student's university applications in a timely manner, including but not limited to, application forms, personal statements, transcripts, counsellor and teacher recommendation letters, references, portfolio submissions and resumes.

2. Management of resources:
  • To help create, develop and manage a comprehensive and teenage-friendly University Counselling Resource and Information Centre
  • To seek professional development opportunities that will enrich the knowledge of the team.

3. Planning and development
  • To keep abreast of current developments in the field of university counselling and futures planning (including remote research and physical visits).
  • Be willing to present at local, regional and international conferences and be able to attend conferences.
  • To consider such developments in the context of the school's philosophy for the curriculum as a whole.

4. Monitoring and Evaluation
  • To analyse and interpret relevant school data to inform policies and practices.
  • To have knowledge of and experience with CIALFO, UNIFROG (or other online platforms), including e-docs, Parchment and Slate.
  • Work with Tutors and the Pastoral Team to ensure that students are fully supported throughout the future planning process.
  • Work with academic HOD/HOF to ensure students are in receiving appropriate support from subject specialists when preparing for specialist courses and interviews.

5. Specific Responsibilities Which May Apply
  • To provide information, advice and guidance to students and their parents about GCSE options/Post 16 Pathways/University/Higher/Further Education course choices and career options around the world.
  • To provide training on reference writing for staff.
  • To offer counselling on and around IB and A-Level results day.
  • To develop relationships and liaise with Universities and Colleges of Higher Education, visiting academics, business and industry speakers and HE contacts in Singapore and internationally.
  • To work with various local and overseas contacts and professional organisations to ensure accuracy of advice regarding university applications.
  • To help maintain and develop online University & Careers information through the University Counselling microsite and the school website.
  • To help with the development and integration of careers literacy and counselling into the Lifeskills curriculum through liaison with the Head of University Counselling & Careers / Head of Lifeskills or Head of Year.
  • To help with the organisation of careers and higher education events for students and parents, including visiting speakers/university admissions officers, attending parent evenings and hosting college fairs.
  • To hold regular meetings with students and parents.
  • To develop and provide communications to support the University Counselling department initiatives.
  • To assist in coordinating the five-day work experience programme for all Y10 students and assist with placements for Yr11-13 students.
  • To help manage the Oxford interns in the first half-term of Term 1
