Energy Model Developer

About Baringa:
We set out to build the world's most trusted consulting firm - creating lasting impact for clients and pioneering a positive, people-first way of working. We work with everyone from FTSE 100 names to bright new start-ups, in every sector.

You'll find us collaborating shoulder-to-shoulder with our clients, from the big picture right down to the detail: helping them define their strategy, deliver complex change, spot the right commercial opportunities, manage risk, or bring their purpose and sustainability goals to life. Our clients love how we get to know what makes their organisations tick - slotting seamlessly into their teams and being proudly geeky about solving their challenges.

We have hubs in Europe, the US, Asia and Australia, and we work all around the world - from a wind farm in Wyoming to a boardroom in Berlin. Find us wherever there's a challenge to be tackled and an impact to be made.

Our Market, Advisory and Analytics practice are looking for experienced Energy Model Developers.

Baringa are world leaders in energy modelling, using the insights these models provide to drive change in a decarbonising energy industry. Our Energy Model Developers create the tools, perform the simulations and extract the insights that allow Baringa to be the leading trusted advisor for our clients on all aspects of the energy sector. We are looking for experienced Energy Model Developers to join the team, building the next generation of models and using these to answer the toughest questions for our clients.

You will be part of a high calibre, curious and motivated team. You will work with software engineers, modellers, energy consultants and clients - working together to tackle novel and challenging problems. You'll be building on all the great work we've done before, picking up our leading energy modelling toolkit and developing it further. You'll be simulating the latest energy technologies and communicating what it all means for our clients. You will be given responsibility and freedom from day one, in an environment that rewards creativity and entrepreneurship.

Come and join us and be part of the energy transition, the defining challenge of our lifetimes. Let that deep technical knowledge of yours have real impact (and have fun doing it!).

What you will be doing

You will be working within our Power and Low Carbon Solutions team to:

• Deploy the next generation of our energy modelling tools, to allow for new aspects of the changing energy system to be simulated and understood

• Perform multi-decade studies of evolving energy systems, at both local and global scales with a particular focus on the ASEAN region

• Extract insights from energy models and communicate these in a way that creates impact

• Contribute to the design and development of Baringa's global energy scenarios and the application of these into PLEXOS

• Collaborate with colleagues globally to understand requirements for future model development, sometimes doing this development yourself and sometimes feeding requirements to others

• Support and mentor other team members to ensure a high quality energy modelling capability within the team, collaborating both remotely and in person.

• Coaching and training the broader consulting team in best practice modelling across the toolkit including global energy system models and PLEXOS.

Your skills and experience

We're looking for people to join the team who will be committed to designing and building high quality models and tools, and using these to provide market-leading energy insights for our clients. We are interested in fantastic CVs at a range of levels.

Our ideal candidate

• You have a background as a fundamental modeler and/or analyst within the energy sector.

• You have experience working within consultancy.

• You have experience working with, and contributing to, long term energy scenarios.

• You have a strong quantitative background in subjects such as mathematics, physics, computer science, engineering, etc.

• You are great at problem solving and love learning new things to tackle the most difficult challenges.

• You have experience developing energy models in general programming languages (e.g. Scala, Python, Java, C# etc.).

• You are an experienced PLEXOS user

• You have working knowledge of data management platforms (e.g. SQL, NoSQL, Databricks/Spark, etc).

• You love communicating complex concepts succinctly to both technical and non-technical colleagues and clients.

• You are an excellent collaborator and enjoy working with others.

We've seen the research that says that some candidates will not apply to a role if they don't meet every requirement. Don't let this put you off, if you think you are a good overall match please do get in touch - we look carefully at all applications and you may well be our ideal candidate.

What a career at Baringa will give you

Putting People First.
Baringa is a People First company and wellbeing is at the forefront of our culture. We recognise the importance of work-life balance and flexible working and provide our staff amazing benefits. Some of these benefits include:

• Generous Annual Leave Policy: We recognise everyone needs a well-deserved break. We provide our employees with 5 weeks of annual leave, fully available at the start of each year. In addition to this, we have introduced our 5-Year Recharge benefit which allows all employees an additional 2 weeks of paid leave after 5 years continuous service.

• Flexible Working: We know that the 'ideal' work-life balance will vary from person to person and change at different stages of our working lives. To accommodate this, we have implemented a hybrid working policy and introduced more flexibility around taking unpaid leave.

• Corporate Responsibility Days: Our world is important to us, so all our employees get 3 every year to help social and environmental causes and increase our impact on the communities that mean the most to us.

• Wellbeing Fund: We want to encourage all employees to take charge and prioritise their own wellbeing. We've introduced our annual People Fund to support this by offering every individual a fund to support and manage their wellbeing through an activity of their choice.

• Career Progression: No one develops at the same pace. That's why we have quarterly rather than annual promotion reviews. We don't have any quotas: if you're ready and delivering at the right level, you'll get that promotion.

• Profit Share Scheme: All employees participate in the Baringa Group Profit Share Scheme so everyone has a stake in the company's success.

We are proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer. We believe that creating an environment where everyone feels a sense of belonging is central to our culture and that diversity is paramount to driving creativity, innovation, and value for our clients and for our people.
