Electrical engineers in process plants are responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of all electrical systems and equipment. Their scope includes installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and upgradation of electrical infrastructure to minimize downtime and optimize plant productivity.
Key Responsibilities
1. Maintenance Planning & Execution
- Develop and implement preventive and predictive maintenance schedules for electrical equipment.
- Ensure routine checks and servicing of transformers, motors, switchgear, MCC panels, VFDs, UPS, lighting, and earthing systems.
2. Breakdown Troubleshooting
- Diagnose and resolve electrical faults in motors, drives, PLC systems, and control circuits.
- Ensure quick restoration of operations during unplanned shutdowns.
3. System Monitoring & Testing
- Perform insulation resistance tests, earth resistance measurements, relay testing, and thermal scanning.
- Monitor energy consumption and suggest energy-saving measures.
4. Installation & Commissioning
- Supervise installation of new electrical systems and commissioning of new machinery or plant sections.
- Ensure correct sizing of cables, circuit protection, and load balancing.
5. Compliance & Safety
- Ensure compliance with safety standards (e.g., IEC, NEC, NFPA, OSHA) and plant safety protocols.
- Participate in electrical safety audits and risk assessments.
6. Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain records of electrical maintenance, fault logs, test reports, and spare parts inventory.
- Report incidents, failures, and suggest corrective actions.
7. Coordination
- Coordinate with mechanical, instrumentation, and production departments for cross-functional tasks.
- Liaise with vendors and service providers for AMC, warranty claims, or system upgrades.
Requirements & Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (B.E./B.Tech)
- Diploma in Electrical Engineering (for technician/supervisor roles)
Technical Knowledge:
- Strong understanding of electrical power systems, controls, and protection systems
- Knowledge of single-line diagrams (SLD), P&ID, and control wiring diagrams
- Familiarity with electrical equipment in process plants (motors, switchgear, MCCs, VFDs, control panels, transformers)
- Basics of PLC/SCADA (optional but preferred)
Skills:
- Hands-on troubleshooting and diagnostic skills
- CMMS knowledge (SAP PM, Maximo, etc.)
- Ability to read electrical schematics and technical manuals
- Familiarity with energy efficiency and power quality
Safety Knowledge:
- Lockout/Tagout (LOTO)
- Arc flash safety
- Grounding and earthing systems
- PPE and hazard identification
Preferred Certifications (Optional but Useful)
- Electrical Supervisor License (as per local regulations)
- NEBOSH / OSHA safety certifications
- Energy Auditor (BEE-certified - India)
- First Aid and Fire Safety Training
