EngineeringThe Asian School of the Environment (ASE) at Nanyang Technological University is an interdisciplinary school that aims to be a world leader in environmental research focused on Asian environmental challenges. The ASE integrates earth and environmental life science, ecology, engineering and technology, human ecology, humanities, and the social sciences to address key issues of the environment and sustainability. For more details, please view https://www.ntu.edu.sg/ase.
A Research Fellow position is currently available in ASE. The successful candidate will conduct cutting-edge field research on coastal carbon fluxes in Indo-Pacific mangrove and peatland ecosystems. This includes deploying mobile monitoring stations, quantifying groundwater and carbon exchanges using tracers, and modelling carbon export pathways. The position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to nature-based climate solutions through interdisciplinary, policy-relevant science. Field campaigns will be conducted in Brunei, Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore under remote and challenging conditions. The role also includes collaboration with international partners, mentoring students, and contributing to high-impact publications.
Key Responsibilities:
Job Requirements:
ASE seeks a diverse and inclusive workforce and is committed to equality of opportunity. We welcome applications from all and recruit based on merit, regardless of age, race, gender, religion, marital status and family responsibilities, or disability.
We regret to inform that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.

Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct field research in Indo-Pacific wetland ecosystems using mobile monitoring stations to measure lateral carbon fluxes and greenhouse gas exchanges.
- Apply radioisotope tracer techniques to quantify groundwater exchange and assess carbon exchange.
- Analyze and model carbon export data to improve regional carbon budgets and integrate findings into climate models.
- Collaborate with international partners and coordinate field logistics and data sharing across multi-site deployments.
- Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and contribute to the project's scientific and policy impact.
- Support capacity building and outreach, including mentoring students and translating results for stakeholders and carbon market frameworks.
Job Requirements:
- PhD in Environmental Science, Biogeochemistry, Marine Science, or a related discipline, with a strong foundation in carbon cycling, aquatic systems, or mangrove/coastal ecosystems.
- Demonstrated experience in field-based environmental research, ideally in tropical or intertidal environments.
- Proficiency in environmental sample handling and analysis (e.g., greenhouse gas monitoring, biogeochemical sensors, hydrological tracers, or carbon flux estimation).
- Strong skills in quantitative data analysis and environmental modeling, with the ability to manage and interpret complex datasets from multi-site deployments.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a track record of scientific publications and the ability to engage with policy or stakeholder audiences.
