As a Control Engineer at Amperesand, you will support the development of advanced control algorithms and embedded systems for high-voltage Solid-State Transformers (SSTs). This position will play a key role in the design, simulation, implementation, and validation of digital control strategies within a multidisciplinary R&D team focused on next-gen SST platforms.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Design and implement control algorithms for multi-stage power electronic systems (AC-DC, DC-DC, DC-AC) used in high-voltage SSTs.
• Develop real-time embedded control code (e.g., using C/C++ or model-based design with MATLAB/Simulink) for DSPs, FPGAs, or microcontrollers.
• Simulate and analyze control strategies using MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, or PSIM.
• Support hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing and closed-loop validation of controllers.
• Collaborate with hardware, firmware, and system engineers to integrate and optimize control performance.
• Conduct root-cause analysis and tuning of control loops for stability, transient response, and harmonic mitigation.
• Interface with high-voltage lab testing teams to validate control strategies on prototype SST hardware.
• Stay current with emerging control methods, digital signal processing, and power conversion trends.
• Document control designs, test procedures, and validation results for internal and external stakeholders.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Advance power electronics design: In depth knowledge on designing different converter topologies used on advance power electronics systems for the high voltage and high power applications.
• Control System Design: support in the design and development of advanced control systems for power converters, considering factors such as efficiency, stability, and grid integration.
• Algorithm Development: Develop control algorithms and strategies for power converters to improve dynamic response, fault tolerance, and performance.
• Modeling and Simulation: Create mathematical models and perform simulations to validate control system designs and optimize performance.
• Software Implementation: Collaborate with software engineers to implement control algorithms in embedded software and firmware.
• Testing and Validation: Design and execute test plans to validate control system performance and robustness.
• Hardware Integration: lead and coordinate the integration of control electronics with power converter hardware.
• PCB Design and Development: Work closely in the PCB design activities including test and verification
• Documentation: Prepare comprehensive documentation of control system designs, including specifications, schematics, and test reports.
• Troubleshooting: Identify and resolve control-related issues during development and product testing phases.
• Compliance: Ensure that control systems meet industry standards and regulatory requirements.
• Mentorship: Provide guidance and mentorship to junior controls engineers.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or a related field.
• Minimum of 8 years of experience in electrical hardware design and controls engineering, with a focus on advance power converter systems.
• Familiarity with advanced modulation strategies (e.g., SVPWM, DPWM, phase-shift control, thriple-phase shift).
• Proficiency in control system design, analysis, and simulation tools (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink).
• Strong programming skills in languages such as C/C++ for embedded systems.
• Experience with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing and control system validation with exposure to real-time simulation tools like OPAL-RT or Typhoon HIL.
• Knowledge of grid integration, grid codes, and power quality standards is a plus.
