Job Description

  • Clinical Counselling Coordinator
    • Provides care and support services such as counselling, support for students with special educational needs and peer helping programme
    • Provides support to students experiencing emotional difficulties by helping them to identify and work through their issues and to assist students to reach their own resolutions or develop strategies to address their concerns
    • Provides guidance, consultation, and training to clinical and support staff regarding clinical services
    • Assists the Head of Centre in maintaining and monitoring the Centre's clinical records/database, as to plan the counselling services accordingly
    • Assists in coordinating psychiatric and other complementary care services (e.g., disability advocacy, mental health awareness)
    • Coordinates the Centre's clinical testing/assessment
    • Works closely with the SMU Peer Helpers in providing guidance to their clinical skills
    • Advances the Centre's cooperation with the internal departments to provide quality and necessary services to the school community
    • Advances and maintains the Centre's connection with community providers of mental health services (e.g. EPIP, FSCs, etc.)
    • Generates researchable ideas regarding counselling in order to expand domain knowledge
  • Training Coordinator
    • Provides leadership, administrative oversight and clinical supervision of the Centre's counselling interns and/or volunteer counsellors
    • Oversees the selection, training and evaluation of interns
    • Develops and conducts training and workshops for the university community
    • Develops and maintains connections with trainees' academic departments and professional training organisations
  • Counselling Services
    • Provides individual and group counselling and psychotherapy for the university community
    • Provides emergency and crisis intervention services
    • Assesses student concerns through clinical interviews and clinical assessment instruments where appropriate, to determine students' counselling needs
    • Consults with members of the SMU community (e.g., faculty, staff, administrators, students, family members) and the professional community (e.g., social workers, case managers) where appropriate, to assist students
    • Develops, implements, and evaluates outreach and/or psycho-educational programmes that address psychological needs and concerns, personal development, and psychological wellness
    • Assists with the referral of students to resources on and off campus
    • Provides services consistent with professional ethical standards and generally accepted standards of practice
    • Other clinical duties appropriate to the position, as assigned
  • Centre’s Administration
    • Supervises the daily operations of the Centre
    • Plans and organises administrative activities of the Centre
    • Monitors the updating of filing and records system
  • Professional Counselling Research
    • Generates ideas for counselling research and publications
    • Conducts and/or facilitates the preparation of research and publications

Qualifications

  • Minimum Masters degree (Doctorate preferred) in Counselling or related disciplines (social work, psychology, etc)
  • Minimum 10 years of clinical experience in a diversified environment
  • Growing knowledge and expertise on matters regarding services for individuals with disabilities
  • Growing understanding of current counselling theories
  • Experienced in conducting training and workshops
  • Ability to generate research ideas
  • Ability to lead, plan and act in ways that take into account the Centre’s vision and long-term goals
  • Good co-ordination and organizational skills
  • Work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Possess empathy, patience, and passion for working with youths and young adults in a tertiary educational setting
  • Possess a mature disposition and outlook toward clients in an empathic yet objective manner
  • Willingness to adapt to changes and able to work as a team or independently
  • Flexible, able to multitask and work independently within tight timelines
  • Committed team player, responsible, reliable and able to work with others to achieve the university goals
  • Ability and willingness to work outside of office hours and on weekends
  • Candidates with more relevant experience may be considered for the role of Clinical Assistant Director

Candidates who do not possess the stipulated qualifications but have relevant work experience may still apply. Remuneration and appointment terms shall commensurate with qualifications and experience. SMU reserves the right to modify the appointment terms where necessary.
