Job Description

The EDGE: EdTech Greenhouse, under the ambit of SMU’s Centre for Teaching Excellence, is an exciting educational technology set-up which aims to translate high potential research projects (e.g. Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, learning analytics etc. ) into minimum viable products for potential campus-wide distribution, bringing about the synthesis of design and development to enhance student learning outcomes.

As part of the dynamic EDGE team, the Project Manager, Systems Integration, is required to identify and explore the complex technical and business issues involved in integrating custom software, hardware solutions, commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software and business procedures and services. This would require the clear analysis of existing research prototypes and user requirements for translation to deployment to the university. The project manager’s role is to manage projects of increasing scale, complexity, and risk and to make sure that all of the components come together to ensure that the projects are completed on time and within budget. He/she will work closely with faculty researchers, software developers and the SMU’s Integrated Information Technology Services to understand user requirements, define and deliver new features, test new concepts, and assist with IT Systems integration and final implementation.

  • Explore product concepts to find and propose promising directions that address both human and business needs.
  • Supervise and manage the coding and development of software prototypes and minimum viable products.
  • Collaborate closely with User Experience (UX) designers and researchers.
  • Project management and support multiple projects simultaneously while meeting tight deadlines.
  • Advise front-end engineers on User Interface (UI) implementation best practices.


  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science/Engineering.
  • 3-5 years of professional experience in project management.
  • Experience in managing cross-functional projects.
  • Ability to write codes to develop proof of concept/minimum viable product systems.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) is not required, but would be advantageous.
  • Ability to build relationships with and influence other functional areas.
  • Ability to apply Design Thinking/user-centric methodology to understand user requirements.
  • Ability to write codes (preferred Programming language: C# and Python) to develop proof of concept/minimum viable product systems.
  • Experience in the supervision of the coding and development of software prototypes.
  • Knowledge in common database manipulation language, e.g. Structured Query Language (SQL) and applications programming.
  • Experience in machine learning methods and algorithm would be advantageous.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Highly developed verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience in managing cross-functional projects.
  • Organization and time management skills.
  • Problem-solving skills with ability to perform root cause analysis.
  • Ability to manage several concurrent projects.
  • Knowledge of the development project lifecycle (e.g., design, development, testing, implementation, etc.)
  • Extensive experience in meeting planning, facilitation, and presentation.

Candidates who do not possess the stipulated qualifications but have relevant work experience may still apply. Remuneration and appointment terms shall commensurate with qualifications and experience. SMU reserves the right to modify the appointment terms where necessary.
