Background

The UWCSEA Dover IDEAS Hub is a place that will inspire and support our community to explore, innovate, collaborate and create sustainable solutions to shape a better world. The IDEAS Hub draws inspiration from the Maker movement and social enterprise collaboratives. The raison d’ȇtre of the IDEAS Hub is to provide a physical location where people gather to share resources and work on projects, by learning from each other through collaboration and networking; as well as providing access to mentorship and event programmes. The successful incumbent will be working closely with Students, Parents, Staff and other clients using the IDEAS Hub.

The IDEAS Hub achieves its objective in four key ways:

  • providing an inviting and well-equipped space that encourages collaboration and supports multidisciplinary thinking and skill development
  • the development and delivery of an innovative events programs that reaches out to to all members of the UWCSEA community
  • the development of a mentoring programme to support individuals and groups in developing ideas and skills
  • building and leveraging links with like minded organisations in Singapore and beyond

We are now to grow the team within the IDEAS Hub. This is an exciting post with plenty of scope for the right individual to make their mark on this exciting project.

Job Description
The IDEAS Hub Technician will maintain and support the equipment and environs of the IDEAS Hub and work with clients in using the equipment safely, developing their skills and helping with projects. This role reports to the IDEAS Hub Technical Manager
 

Primary Responsibilities

Main activities related to the practical work

  • be proficient in the use of workshop machinery for wood, metal and plastic, 3D printing
  • preparing materials for practical based work 
  • arranging tools, fixtures, materials for focused demonstrations
  • ensuring that all hand tools are available and in good, safe condition for use by clients
  • tidying up and checking that all tools and equipment are in their racks after the practical sessions

Assisting with practical sessions and students

  • demonstrations to aid teacher delivery e.g. preparation for routering, electric arc welding
  • To provide technical support during activities as required.
  • Give advice and work alongside clients giving one to one support during activities

Health and safety, repairs and general maintenance

  • under the direction of the IDEAS Hub technical manager help to maintain machinery and equipment in accordance with Health & Safety requirements.
  • to control and store safely all chemicals, flammables and specialised solutions.
  • carry out weekly Health and Safety checks on all equipment and machinery and maintain a record of all equipment checks
  • assist the IDEAS Hub Technical Manager in the production of Risk assessments and their display and to maintain all necessary safety signs floor marking adjacent to machinery
  • sharpening hand tools, servicing and cleaning machine tools and equipment
  • repairing tools and equipment and  maintenance of units, for example, checking vices for damage and serviceability
  • maintaining the good order and organisation of the IDEAS Hub areas, equipment, and its storage facilities

Administrative tasks

  • To maintain and monitor stock control and equipment to ensure all visitors are able to access a wide range materials  by keeping records, liaison with suppliers, ordering material, sorting out invoices and receipts, storing materials and regular inventory checks.
  • To assist the IDEAS Hub Technical manager in staying within the budget

Miscellaneous

  • to assist in developing appropriate resources to support the IDEAS Hub programme
  • to undertake general maintenance and DIY tasks including making furniture and storage equipment
  • to assist in the production and updating of displays within the Hub
  • to be proficient in the use of CAM equipment
  • to be proficient in the use of CAD software.
  • ensuring that 3D printers and other equipment is filled with consumable items and are in good working condition
  • restocking of relevant areas with consumable items e.g paper, masking tape
  • to undertake other relevant tasks as requested by the IDEAS Hub Technical Manager

Personal Characteristics

  • Commitment to the philosophy and mission of UWCSEA
  • Passion and knowledge about the use of technologies to support creative, engaged learning.
  • Experience in developing innovative and novel content for informal settings.
  • A passionate, experienced practitioner and mentor in one or more of: making, coding , robotics, filmmaking, rapid prototyping, product development
  • Comfortable with a hands on approach, particularly an ability to improvise with audiences of varied ages, the use of hand tools, electronics, computer software, hardware and various other technologies
  • Active participant and / or knowledge of the Singapore creative and/or entrepreneurial scene
  • Ability to get ideas accepted and to guide a group or individual to accomplish the task.
  • Demonstrable experience in working with teams with the ability to harness team creativity and translate into effective programming.
  • An effective collaborator, coordinator, team builder, and mentor and who is skilled at leveraging the talents of others and solving problems.
  • Strong communications skills with the ability to express ideas clearly both in written and oral communications and capacity to use social media.
  • Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends
  • Experience in a K-12 environment desirable

The successful candidate will be offered a 18-month contract with UWCSEA.
