UWCSEA East has a vacancy for the 2021/2022 school year for a Head of Middle School English (ages 11- 14).  The successful candidate must have a tertiary qualification in relevant subjects and significant teaching experience teaching English to 11 -14 year old. The Head of Middle School English, in collaboration with the Vice Principal (Academic), leads the teaching and learning of English for all Middle School students. They lead their team of teachers in creating a positive learning environment based on the values of honesty, integrity, respect and responsibility. The Head of Department fosters a sense of community within the Middle School through their active leadership and interactions with students, parents, teachers and the wider community.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Strategically lead the English programme and guide, develop and motivate teachers to oversee students’ learning and well-being in English, aligned with the values of our school and taking necessary action as necessary.
  • Intentionally support and build a culture of care and collaboration within the English department where there is a shared commitment to cultivate wellbeing. This includes opportunities to feel connected, autonomous, and competent—for students, staff, and parents alike.
  • Planning, developing, delivering, assessing and reporting on student learning in Middle School English. Using the UWCSEA Learning Principles and College Strategic plan to set goals and make informed decisions for implementation of the UWCSEA written curriculum based on the needs of the Middle School strategic development goals. 
  • Supporting the professional learning of the Middle School English department through learning focused meetings, coaching, professional feedback, and other means to cultivate a learning culture. 
  • Working with colleagues in Primary School and High School to ensure an articulated learning experience and smooth transitions for student learning to take place between the schools.
  • Liaising with the teacher librarian to support dynamic use of classroom libraries and main library spaces.
  • Communicating with students, teachers, and parents by initiating and responding with efficiency and updating student’s progress in English to Parents and Teachers. 
  • Providing feedback to the Vice-Principals and Principal on the planning and operation of the Middle School Learning Programme.
  • Developing and practising personal leadership skills aligned with the UWCSEA Leadership standards through a process of goal setting and self reflection.
  • Lead the team to review and write well-designed and engaging units of study that bring to life the important conceptual understandings that are in the English curriculum.
  • Identify vacancies and staffing needs within the English department and participate in the interview process as appropriate and manage budgeting and ordering of resources and materials for the department.

Person Specifications:

  • A good degree and a recognized teaching qualification or certification are expected.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, experience and pedagogical knowledge in areas outlined by the UWCSEA Learning Principles and the UWCSEA Profile.
  • Experience of developing concept-based teaching approaches, contemporary assessment practices and the application of blended learning to enhance learning.
  • Ability to inspire, lead and model pedagogical practices in English for improved student learning.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively, communicate clearly, self-manage and to think and act in critical, creative and innovative ways to support teaching and learning across the Middle School.
  • Teachers should be willing and eager to participate in the five key elements of a UWCSEA education: Academics; Activities; Outdoor Education; Personal and Social Education and Service Academic expectations include enthusiastic participation in Professional Learning.
  • Pastoral expectations include the leadership of a mentor group, unless the teacher is exempted due to other responsibilities.
  • On average the College expects a yearly contribution of two sessions per week in each season to Activities and/or Service.
  • The College expects that teachers will participate enthusiastically in the curricular Outdoor Education experiences which are relevant to their students and will also occasionally volunteer for holiday Outdoor Education trips.
  • A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is essential alongside a willingness to adapt and develop pedagogy to meet the needs of our learners.
  • Culturally competent practitioner who is committed to developing student access to diverse and representational literature and media. 
  • A good understanding of best practice in English and Literacy education. It is desirable that applicants have experience with the Readers and Writers Workshop pedagogical model. 
  • A commitment to reading and recommending middle school literature.
  • Suitable applicants should have experienced middle leadership, or be able to demonstrate their potential to lead a department of five-eight teachers and support staff.
