Job Description

UWCSEA has a part-time vacancy between January 2021 and June 2021 at its East Campus for a Social-Emotional Counsellor to work with students from Grade 6 - 12 with ages ranging between 11-18 years. Applicants must be available to work three full days per week (Monday, Wednesday and Thursday is desirable).

The Counselling Department

There are three full-time counsellors at UWCSEA East Campus, one counsellor dedicated to each part of the school. We also have a part-time counsellor dedicated to additional support in the High School. We provide a confidential, empathetic empowerment service that enhances student well-being and access to learning opportunities. We offer staff personal support to enable the academic, social or emotional development of students or themselves and work collaboratively with parents and families in times of individual or collective need.


The counsellors aim to provide a developmentally-appropriate service which could include any or all of the following: the provision of confidential individual or group counselling, individual student planning and goal-setting, effective liaison with parents and teachers, as well as classroom guidance and support.


Please note that to apply for this role, you must have an internationally recognised qualification and reside in Singapore. You must also be available from January 2021.

Main Responsibilities

1. Students

  • Provide a flexible approach which employs a range of therapeutic practices to meet individual needs relating to social, emotional or psychological well-being
  • Counsel individuals who self refer with an appropriate client-centred approach
  • Counsel students referred by the Principal, Vice Principals, Heads of Grade, in close liaison with the relevant teacher/s and academic coaching team
  • Counsel students referred by their parents and engage external counselling / psychological support agencies when appropriate.
  • Organise small group counselling for students in times of need as required


2. Staff

  • Be available to support individual staff members with advice that will improve the academic, social and emotional development of students.
  • Arrange professional learning workshops for teaching staff relating to social and emotional well-being on a needs basis.
  • Work within a collaborative team in continuous development of the K-12 Personal and Social Education Learning Program.
  • Work as a collaborative member of the broader Student Support Team (ie: with Head’s of Grade, Vice Principals, English language teachers, boarding parents, Academic Coaching and Learning Support)
  • Keep staff informed of relevant laws and procedures in regard to Safeguarding and the welfare of students.
  • Involvement with Peer Supervision with other counsellors
  • Supporting the Boarding House Counsellor through Clinical Supervision


3. Parents

  • Work collaboratively with parents and families where a need has arisen that affects student learning (eg. Health concerns, prolonged absence, behaviour)
  • Facilitate parent education sessions appropriate to the age level and participate in Parent Support Groups or forums as the need arises.


Person Specifications

  • A minimum qualification of a Graduate Diploma in Counselling or a Master of Psychology, Master of Counselling or related field.
  • Counselling experience and training with a focus on adolescent mental health and wellbeing is essential
  • A formal teaching qualification would be desirable but is not essential
  • Experience across all ages, including parent education
  • Experience working closely with a Boarding Community
  • Knowledge and experience in Child Protection and Safeguarding
  • The ability to engage with students and to engender enthusiasm for learning is a pre-requisite for working at UWCSEA.
  • Willingness and eagerness to participate in the five key elements of a UWCSEA education: Academic; Personal and Social Education; Service; Activities; Outdoor Education
  • Enthusiasm to participate in Professional Development, both that which is mandated by the College and that which is identified by the Counsellor.
  • Enthusiastic about counselling within a multi-cultural environment.
  • Flexibility of approach and a collaborative style are essential.
  • A high level of interpersonal skills and the ability to develop positive working relationships with a wide range of people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Skills in conflict resolution and problem solving will be required as will the ability to respond effectively to crisis situations involving student welfare.
  • The appointee will collaborate with teachers, parents, external agencies and other staff to enhance effectiveness in supporting social and emotional wellbeing and access to learning opportunities.
