Overview of the Opportunity

ArtScience Museum is recruiting for a new Assistant Manager for Education and Engagements within the Programmes team. This role is part of a growing education team and will take an active role in contributing to education content development and engagements with core stakeholders.

ArtScience Museum is the cultural institution in Singapore that explores the intersection between art, science, technology and culture. Since opening in February 2011, we have staged large-scale exhibitions by some of the world’s major artists, including Leonardo da Vinci, Salvador Dalí, Andy Warhol, Vincent Van Gogh, and M.C. Escher, as well as showing work by contemporary artists including Theo Jansen, Lynette Wallworth, Ryoji Ikeda, Yang Yongliang, Semiconductor, Olafur Eliasson, Anish Kapoor, Mariko Mori and many more. The museum has also presented significant exhibitions that explore aspects of science, including big data, particle physics, natural history, marine biology, cosmology and space exploration.

Featuring 21 gallery spaces totaling nearly 5000m2, our lotus-inspired building has staged major international exhibitions in partnership with renowned museums and galleries around the world, including the British Museum, Science Museum in London, the American Museum of Natural History in New York, CCCB in Barcelona, the Ambrosiana in Milan, Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, the Australian Centre for Moving Image in Melbourne, and many others.  We also originate and produce exhibitions in-house, and run a full programme of education, events, activities and learning opportunities for a wide range of audiences. The Education team within the Programmes Department is responsible for developing and implementing a full programme of education, events, activities and interactive opportunities for a wide range of audiences. These include:

  • A schools education programme, providing guided tours, printed resources for students and educators, and workshops;
  • An engagement programme for educators, offering events and educational activities for teachers
  • Guided tours, creative workshops and demonstrations for general visitors;
  • Family Fridays: increased provision for families every Friday, where up to four children can visit for free for every single paying adult;
  • Outreach events (e.g, Singapore Science Festival, ECSITE, ASPAC, schools outreach etc.)
  • School holiday events special events to celebrate special events and anniversaries, for instance Teachers’ Day or public holiday programming.

The department is also responsible for a broad range of public programmes, including screenings, performances, talks and conferences, festivals and conceptual collaborations and in-gallery activities, such as live music, dance and poetry recitals. The two teams within the department has rich opportunity to cross-pollinate their interests and develop new projects together.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct content research and development of educational offerings/resources/events for assigned projects and exhibitions and ensure offerings are closely aligned to museum’s mandate
  • Collaborate closely with both internal and external stakeholders including exhibition managers and designers and other relevant personnel
  • Working closely with other departments such as Marketing and Communication teams for publicity purposes
  • Ensuring adequate manpower and resources via scheduling and deployment of team members for various engagements whilst looking after team’s welfare
  • To lead on the development and maintenance of meaningful long-term relationship with schools through engagements such as work attachments, community engagements or similar
  • Develop, manage and adhere to volunteer policies, procedures and standards of service through proper recruitment process, orientation, training and special programmes for museum volunteer guides
  • Constantly evaluate all aspects of initiatives and offerings to ensure effectiveness and to recommend/implement changes wherever appropriate
  • To initiate and manage the development and implementation of special projects when the opportunity arises
  • To deputise for the Education Manager, Programmes when required
  • Other duties as directed

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Essential

  • A minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in English, Creative Writing, Fine Arts, Arts Management, Museum Studies, Education or similar
  • At least three years in content development for out-of-classroom learning
  • Experience or demonstrable interest in more than one of the following areas: researching content; developing educational resources; copyediting and writing; museum operations; administration; education
  • Familiar with the school curriculums in Singapore and have previous experience developing education contents which can tie in closely with the school curriculums
  • Keen interest in the Arts and Science, and a love of learning and working with people of all ages
  • Proficient in written and spoken English (essential), and at least one other spoken language/dialect (desirable)
  • Track record and skills in strong content writing and administrative duties, including a working understanding of Microsoft Office applications
  • Able to use good judgment and discretion and maintain calm demeanor in high volume or stressful situations
  • Ability to manage and execute numerous tasks with competing deadlines
  • Track record in being an effective and active team player
  • Proactive in being continually aware and updated about changes to ArtScience Museum
  • Able to work on weekends and public holidays, if required.

Preferable

  • Previous volunteer management and training experience or similar
  • Good network of contacts in education
