  • This position is for Institute of Innovation & Entrepreneurship (IIE).
  • Monitor and oversee the performance of key commercialization projects, providing support and guidance to the project team through the cycle of commercialization up to spin-off and beyond.
  • Actively engage the faculty researcher on potential venture building opportunities, and support them in the formation of the commercialization project team.
  • Actively identify potential commercialization opportunities within the SMU community and galvanise faculty to explore practical translation of research.
  • Pull together a team with relevant expertise to venture build, when needed, and to monitor progress.
  • Source and invite strategic industry experts to participate in the evaluation panel meetings.
  • Drive evaluation panel activities such as coordination for proposal presentations by project team, evaluation and final presentation at the panel, including involvement in the post-panel project technical and business case reviews.
  • Facilitate post-award activities for the awarded projects, including but not limited to support in incubation space, mentor matching, networking activities, training programmes and IP / legal advices.
  • Track and monitor the commercialization project’s performance, development and milestones (relating to the grant disbursement), and prepare user-friendly management reports.
  • Organise training programmes to upskill faculty on competencies needed for commercialization.
  • Build database and identify individuals as potential entrepreneurial leads for commercialization teams
  • Track development and keep up-to-date on the latest technological and business developments in related field / sector, including current knowledge of sector specific industry news, regulations and contacts.
  • Identify other channels of funding and mentorship support to increase chances of market adoption and success of spin-offs.
  • Identify synergies with academic, government, industry networks and ecosystem stakeholders to generate opportunities and create partnerships for commercialization.
  • Develop long term and annual execution plan to ensure achievement of targets set.
  • Engage with industry networks and facilitate the formation of effective partnerships between technology transfer offices, government, industry and investment community to identify collaboration and funding opportunities.

  • Degree / Post-Graduate degree in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) related field.
  • Minimum 1 to 3 years of work experience in a STEM environment. Individuals with STEM background (Academia, Researchers or Technical Specialist), Startup Founders or individuals with business development experience in a STEM environment.
  • Demonstrate strong interest to engage in Innovation and Entrepreneurship (I&E) activities through technology commercialization.
  • Training will be provided for the individual to gain understanding of the I&E environment and key technology commercialization skills.
  • Up to date with industry and technology trends.
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills.
  • Effective communication, presentation and stakeholder management skills.
  • Detail-oriented and team-oriented with a strong desire to be successful.
  • Able to think creatively and problem-solve in high pressure situations.
  • Strong work ethic as well as a dedicated and positive attitude.
  • A keen sense of ownership and accountability and act with a sense of urgency to meet tight deadlines.
  • Think beyond own area of responsibility examining linkages and interactions between different parts of a system.
  • Value hard work and outcome driven.
  • Strong knowledge of budget, grant administration and financial management principles.

Candidates who do not possess the stipulated qualifications but have relevant work experience may still apply. Remuneration and appointment terms shall commensurate with qualifications and experience. SMU reserves the right to modify the appointment terms where necessary.
